2012 Celtic Cup, Dublin,  Ireland - Saturday 14th April 2012

The Scottish Celtic Cup team landed in Edinburgh this morning after a successful weekend of competition at the 2012 Celtic Cup.

The Scotland team travelled to Ireland on Friday morning and for the majority of the young gymnasts, this was their first time representing Scotland at international level.  Following an evening of training at Dublin City University the team was full of anticipation for the day ahead and what the competition would hold for the Scottish delegation.

The men’s and women’s minor events took place on the morning of Saturday 14th April with the MA team competing against teams from Ireland, Northern Ireland and Isle of Man.  The WA team was competing against teams from Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Isle of Man.

In the MA event the Scottish Team excelled finishing in 1st and becoming the 2012 Celtic Cup minor champions.  The team was more than 10 points clear of Northern Ireland who finished in 2nd place and Isle of Man who finished 3rd.  There were some notable performances from all the gymnasts and team coaches Andrew Webb and John Campbell were extremely pleased with the MA team’s performance.  “All the boys did exactly what we had asked of them on the day.  There were only two major mistakes and one fall throughout the whole competition.  The boys did exceptionally well.”  In addition to the team gold, Ryan McKerchar finished 3rd AA with a score of 68.7 just 0.3 behind 2nd place. Paul Karnejenko and Adam Logan took 4th and 5th place consecutively.  The AA title was taken by Ewan McAteer of Northern Ireland.

In the WA event the Scottish girls fought off tough competition from Ireland and Northern Ireland to finish in 2nd place behind the Welsh team with a score of 169.15.  The WA team had a very good competition, managing to go clean on all four pieces with only one fall.  The WA team coaches Gemma Burrows and Isabel Walton were very happy with the Scottish team’s performance.  “The girls excelled on the day and we are very proud of all their hard work.”  In the AA Louise McColgan finished in 5th place with the minor title taken by Eloise Aitken of Wales.

All in all the 2012 Celtic Cup was a successful competition for Scotland; the teams did what they came to Ireland to do: work hard and have a clean competition.

Congratulations to all the gymnasts and coaches on their success!
