Advice on Insurance validity for teaching Specialist Populations

Specialist population clients include: a) 14-16 year olds, b) disabled people, c) older adults (50+), d) ante/post natal women.

Instructors should give guidance to encourage special population clients* to take part in sessions whilst following key safety guidelines. Instructors should always discourage clients from anything deemed to be potentially hazardous to enable them to take part in the session.

Please note that our workshop add-ons are designed to aid instructors when an individual from one of the above listed specialist population groups wishes to take part in an existing session; these workshops do not qualify you to deliver sessions specifically for these groups however they will aid you in adapting your current classes to accommodate individuals who fall within these specialist groups. In order to instruct a session specifically for these specialist population groups you must hold the relevant Level 2/3 qualification for the specific group.

Fitness Scotland strongly advice that instructors do not deliver sessions out with your qualification remit.

For children's fitness classes a specific children's fitness qualification should be held along with additional child protection training. A PVG/ Disclosure check is also requirement when instructing children's classes. More information on this can be found on the Ethics and Child Protection section of the Scottish Gymnastics website. www.scottishgymnastics.org

As always please do not hesitate to contact the Fitness Scotland office should you have any questions regarding your insurance cover.
