Rhythmic Performance Camp | Disability Gymnasts Make History
Eight disability gymnasts from City of Glasgow Gymnastics Club attended the rhythmic performance camp at the Regional Performance Centre for Sport in Dundee on 16 March. This is the first time across any discipline that disability gymnasts have attended a performance camp in Scotland.
After warming up alongside their fellow camp attendees, the disability gymnasts were provided with specialised training in ballet from Tom Edwards. This training proved to be a fan favourite with the group. There was not a face without a smile as Tom taught the group some ballet fundamentals.
After a well-deserved break, the gymnasts moved on to carpet training. They were allowed to express themselves on the floor and were provided with insightful coaching. The day ended with physical preparation, led by strength and conditioning coach, Paul Coyle. Even with tired legs, the enthusiasm of the gymnasts remained constant throughout.
Speaking on the significance of the integration of disability gymnasts into the performance camp, Scottish Gymnastics Rhythmic Committee Chair, Ruth Wilson, said this:
“It’s extremely important to provide disability gymnasts with opportunities like this camp.It would be great if they could take away even more excitement for rhythmic gymnastics. Many of these gymnasts have been around for a large number of years and are clearly really dedicated so it would be nice if the camp reinvigorates that interest a little bit more from all the activities they will do today.”
