Regional Pathway Training - WAG

Regional Pathway Training

Through sportscotland investment, an emphasis on performance development was agreed to establish a regional coaching infrastructure.

In March 2017 Scottish Gymnastics sucessfully recruited nine coaches into the region roles with each of them working towards the long term Scottish Gymnastics objective (by 2027) to ‘Expand the talent pool and develop Scottish gymnasts to British and World performance levels’.

This long term objective can only be achieved by collectively growing the numbers of gymnasts entering the competitive pathway. SG do not expect the pathway coaches to ‘produce’ gymnasts so early on in their journey and therefore the programme will focus on the pathway coaches delivering coach development session within each of the four regions.

These regional sessions will focus on three key themes:

  • Sessions will underpin good technical knowledge and understanding of the fundamental skills for gymnasts.

  • The pathway coaches will act as mentors for WAG coaches who need support in their development

  • Establish performance development environments using learning obtained through mentors, Edinburgh Napier University & SG support staff.

Scottish Gymnastics have sucessfully created a partnership with South Essex Gymnastic Club (SEGC) utilising their technical expertise in the shape of Director of Coaching Scott Hann MBE and Head Womens Coach Ross Falsetta. The pathway coaches have over 18 contact days with SEGC and their fantastic coaches to develop and understand what it takes to produce gymnasts entering and suceeding in a pathway environment. In addition, Ross Falsetta leads on two WAG camps focusing on further developing our home grown talent, the first of which was a overwhelming sucess in October 2017.

Over the coming weeks and months SG will be communication more and more about the regional pathway coaches and how coaches at all levels can get involved in the sesions.
