Request a Course

Scottish Gymnastics tries to accommodate any requests by clubs and local authorities to run courses. These need to have a certain number of learners and complement the other education courses on offer.

How to request a course
Please contact the education team on coacheducation@scottishgymnastics.org, stating
•  type of course you would like
•  number of candidates you have attending the course
•  venue which has suitable equipment
•  date options to run the course

Club or local authority
You should:
•  source candidates interested in attending the course. There should be at least ten candidates for level 1 and eight candidates for level 2.  The maximum number of coaches is 12 for each level
•  provide at least one gymnast of an appropriate standard per candidate. Gymnasts should have already taken part in a gymnastics class and be aware of the basic rules of the gym eg, appropriate dress and behaviour expected
•  source a facility with appropriate gymnastics equipment should in line with equipment requirements below
You must:
•  provide a chaperone for a preschool course to register and sign out the gymnasts before and after the course. The chaperone must also be available at break and lunch time for the gymnasts. Ideally this should be someone who already has a relationship with the gymnasts
•  identify an appropriate mentor(s) for the candidates who holds a qualification at least one level above the course learner, ideally in the same discipline
Candidate must
•  be booked onto a course at least four weeks before the course starts and payment must be made in full at time of booking

What you can expect from Scottish Gymnastics
We will
•  advertise the course on our website and to other clubs/local authorities if you cannot fill the course: this must be at least two months before the course starts
•  provide a qualified professional tutor to deliver the course and an assessor for the exam
•  Wprovide all course resources for the candidate
•  Wadministrate the course in full providing SQA certificates

Equipment requirements

For all Level 2 courses, a theory room, projector, and white screen must be provided for day one of the course.

Acro
•  Level 1 – 12x12m matted floor area, safety mats (minimum of four), training aids (tables/platforms, boxes, benches, blocks), music/audio facilities
•  Level 2 – Level 1 requirements AND rebound equipment (trampoline, DMT, trampette), overhead rig, balance blocks/pedestals

General
•  Level 1 - bars, beam, 12x12m matted floor area, vaulting apparatus, springboards (minimum of two), safety mats (minimum of four), high bar, low bar, A-bars, bench (two minimum), floor beam, beam, spotting blocks (two minimum), hand apparatus (balls, bean bags, hoops or skipping ropes), training aids (benches, elastics, inclines etc)
•  Level 2 - Level 1 requirements AND shiny bar, trampette, trampoline

Men’s artistic
•  Level 1 – 12x12m floor area with 25mm surface, vaulting apparatus and springboards (minimum of two with different tensions), safety mats (minimum of four), low pommel horse (two minimum), one handle mushroom, full height mushroom (two minimum), floor mushroom, full size parallel bars, rings (full size and adjustable), low bar, high bar, shiny bar, spotting blocks (two minimum), trampette, pommel bucket, training aids (benches, elastics, inclines etc)
•  Level 2 – Level 1 requirements AND trampoline

Rhythmic
•  Level 1 & Level 2 – 10x10m matted floor area, hand apparatus; hoops, ropes, clubs, ribbons, balls, ballet barre, mirrored wall, music/audio facilities

TeamGym
•  Level 1 – minimum 12x12m floor, TeamGym trampette (minimum of two), vaulting apparatus, safety mats, trampoline, music/audio facilities, trampoline, tumble track to soft land area or pit, trampette/vault to soft land area/pit
•  Level 2 – Level 1 apparatus AND vaulting table

Trampoline
•  Level 1 – minimum hall height five metres, minimum of two trampolines and end decks, spotting/push in mats, mats to surround apparatus, floor mats for warm up and physical preparation
•  Level 2 – Level 1 requirements AND rigs/belts

Tumbling
•  Level 1 – 10x10m floor, tumble track, safety mats, coaching blocks, rig/belts
•  Level 2 – Level 1 requirements AND fast track into pit, springboards

Women’s artistic
•  Level 1 – 12x12m floor area with 25mm surface, vaulting apparatus and springboards (minimum of two with different tensions), safety mats, low and high bar, asymmetric bars, polished bar, beam and floor beams, trampette, vault table, 60cm blocks (two minimum), music/audio facilities, training aids (benches, elastics, inclines etc)
•  Level 2 – Level 1 requirements AND trampoline

Learn to Coach
•  Learn to Coach – classroom space with projector (two hours), hall space with floor mats and coaching blocks (two hours)

Preschool CPD
•  Essential - 10 x 10m floor area with minimum 25mm thick surface, vaulting apparatus (platform, section box or equivalent), springboard (junior desirable), music/audio facilities, safety mats (minimum of four), hoops (minimum of 12), ropes (12 minimum), Balls (12 minimum), bean bags (minimum of 12), mini bouncer/trampette, bench (two minimum)
•  Desirable - floor beam, low bar or junior bars, floor bar, ribbons (minimum of 12), feathers (12 minimum), scarves (12 minimum), tap sticks (12 minimum), parachute, small apparatus (parachute, hopscotch, ladder, wobble board, tunnel, spots), soft play shapes (wedges, steps, cubes etc), trampoline
