Scottish Gymnastics is delighted to announce Gordon’s Fightback, which aims to raise money for MND Scotland, as official charity partner for Gymfest 2016 and Gymfest Perth 2016.
Gordon Aikman was a keen gymnast, competing for Scotland and later becoming a coach in both men’s artistic and pre-school gymnastics. His mother Nancy and late father Keith were involved in running Kirkcaldy Gymnastics Club since 1990. His sister Lorraine is now head coach, running the club which boasts over 100 members.
In 2014, at the age of just 29, Gordon was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). MND is a progressive and debilitating disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord, shutting down the body. There is no cure for MND, it is a severely life-shortening condition for most people. Life expectancy for about half of those with the condition is three years from the start of symptoms.
Since diagnosis Gordon has refused to give in without a fight, and so began “Gordon’s Fightback”. The aim of the campaign is to raise money for MND Scotland, a charity which funds research in to the disease and provides support to people affected by Motor Neurone Disease. With a target of half a million pounds, Gordon’s Fightback has so far raised an amazing £440,000. In the process, four of seven targets set out have been delivered; specialist MND nurses will be paid for via the NHS opposed to donations made to charity, the number of specialist MND nurses will double, equipment will be made available to all MND sufferers to enable them to record their voices and continue to communicate, and carers will be paid the Living Wage.
As official charity partner for Gymfest 2016 and Gymfest Perth 2016, Scottish Gymnastics hopes to raise both awareness and funds for Gordon’s Fightback. As well as fundraising activities during both events, we encourage all teams participating to begin their own fundraising now. From Shetland, to Dublin, to London, Gymfest teams come from far and wide. Via gymnastics, one of Gordon’s passions as a youngster, we can all help spread the amazing work of his campaign.
Euan Lowe, Scottish Gymnastics CEO, “Scottish Gymnastics is delighted to support Gordon’s Fightback. I hope Gymfest will provide a suitable platform to raise both much needed awareness and funds for MND Scotland.”
“Gymnastics was one of Gordon’s big passions. As a sport gymnastics continues to grow in popularity and is receiving higher awareness than ever before, we are hopeful of using this awareness and our member clubs to support Gordon’s campaign.”
Iain McWhirter, Head of Fundraising and Volunteering for MND Scotland, "We have been amazed at the support Gordon's Fightback has received and how successful Gordon's fundraising and campaigning efforts have been.
"We would like to thank Gymfest for choosing to support MND Scotland through this campaign and all the money raised will go towards funding vital research to find a cure.
"MND Scotland is the only Scottish charity providing support to, and campaigning on behalf of, people affected by MND, as well as funding research into the disease.
