Jason from Enigma Gymnastics Club
We love to hear about the next generation of young leaders, and Jason from Enigma Gymnastics Club has recently completed the Scottish Gymnastics Leadership Award. He shares his thoughts about the experience.
Jason decided to take part in the Leadership Award because he wanted to learn how he could develop his skills and become a more confident and organised leader. Taking part in the course remotely via zoom – Jason joined other young members of his club – finishing the course with a face to face practical session towards the end of last year.
Jason said: “I thought that taking part in the course would assist me when I am helping gymnasts in the classes at my club. Being more organised would help me to learn how to plan sessions or even adapt some of the activities for the kids I work with.
After completing the course, he said: “I personally feel that this course has helped with my confidence, especially when talking in front of large groups. I’m hoping that this will help me both in the gym, and also when I’m in school. I’ve struggled with speaking up and giving answers – and now I feel like I will be able to speak in front of the class more confidently.”
Although I found it quite a struggle to do the course from home at first – the tutor was really helpful in supporting us and when I was stuck on a particular question or task, she gave me the time to work through the challenge and think about how to apply the learning in my day-to-day life.
We asked Jason what he’s say to anyone considering doing the Leadership Award. He said: “It’s a great learning experience and can really boost your confidence. The course helps you to get to know yourself better, and understand others too. I learned so much about myself and it got me thinking about skills I hadn’t used before.
The Scottish Gymnastics Leadership Award is accredited by Sports Leaders and consists of four modules focusing on the basic skills a leader needs to lead others in any sport or activity.
Normally, the course is delivered within a gymnastics context, face to face over two days of workshops. The content has been altered in response to COVID-19 and is now offered online through zoom with only one session that is practical in the gym, although we are now hosting face to face sessions with clubs again.
