Meadowbank Gymnastics Club (GC) has become the 50th club in Scotland to open a purpose-built gymnastics facility.
This Scottish milestone was reached when the club opened the doors for the first classes in their new home in Mayfield, Dalkeith this month. They now plan to provide their community with opportunities to participate in gymnastics and progress through the competition pathway.
The club caters for children from 18 months to adults offering pre-school, beginner/recreational classes, adult classes, competitive floor and vault classes, competitive 4 piece (girls) and 6 piece (boys).
Meadowbank Gymnastics Club was formed in 1971 and was the first gymnastics club in Edinburgh and the Lothians and the first to offer gymnastics at all levels of ability. Training originally took place in the capital’s Meadowbank Sports Centre before classes were introduced in Danderhall, Mayfield and Gorebridge in Midlothian.
Founder and head coach Maggie Bisset dreamed of having their own facility for many years. After feeling “devasted” when the sports centre in Edinburgh was earmarked for closure, everyone at the club worked hard to achieve that ambition.
She said: “I cannot thank team MGC enough for their support in making this dream come true! It has been a wonderful team effort with coaches, parents, gymnasts, family members and friends all involved in renovations, painting, donating items and more. Also, a big thank you to the Children’s Lottery and Social Investment Scotland for financial support and Scottish Gymnastics for their much-appreciated advice.
“For me, it was a very stressful experience at times but so worth the outcome! Meadowbank has its own home at last!”
Scottish Gymnastics club business manager Steven Maloney said: “It’s great to see all the hard work Meadowbank Gymnastics Club and partners have put in over the last year to get the facility they desired. I’m sure all current and new members will appreciate this centre over the coming years. Well done to everyone involved.”
Scottish Gymnastics set a target of more clubs owning or accessing quality gymnastics-specific facilities as part of its 12-year strategic plan. Thanks to the desire and passion of clubs, and the support in place, this goal is being achieved.
With the support of Scottish Gymnastics development team and £1.1 million of funding, an additional 29 clubs have moved into purpose-built facilities since 2014.
