Changes to Pre-School Education

We’re changing our preschool qualifications.

In conjuction with British Gymnastics, we are developing a new two-day continuing professional development (CPD) module available to anyone with a British Gymnastics recognised Level 1 or above coaching qualification. It will be more accessible with on-course assessment and optional online supporting materials including video and eLearning.

We will of course continue to recognise the current Preschool Gymnastics qualifications so holders of these awards, those on-course or registered for a course will continue to be qualified to coach preschool sessions.

Why are we changing this?

We want to increase the number of qualified preschool gymnastics coaches to provide more opportunities for preschool children to enjoy and benefit from gymnastics.  This will enable more clubs, Leisure Centres and other partners to offer preschool gymnastics.

Our research has shown that embedding assessment into the course and reducing the time to qualify will widen access to the activity and encourage more people to train to offer preschool gymnastics.

This is consistent with best practice in our sector which is increasingly focused on extending existing skills into early years work.

From May 2018 we will not organise any new courses leading to the existing qualification, but those already in progress or organised will continue as planned.

We are currently developing the new CPD course and will be piloting it in September 2018 with national roll-out planned to begin in November.
