Fraser McLeod won his third successive DMT title yesterday at the Trampoline and Tumbling British Championships 2017 in Liverpool.

The 14 year-old from Two Foot Higher in East Lothian won gold in Elite Level 15 – 16 after his success in the younger age group in the last two years. Not only that, he won a silver medal in trampoline in his first British championship in this discipline.

In winning gold, Fraser has also attained the score required to compete at the FIG Trampoline Gymnastics World Age Group Competitions 2017 in Sofia, Bulgaria in November.

There was medal success too for Chloe Gaston from Edinburgh Spirals who won a silver medal in trampoline Elite Level 9 – 10. Sophie Campbell from Sapphire just missed out on a place on the podium by 0.200 in tumbling women's 9 - 10, in the first British championships Sapphire's gymnasts had ever qualified for. Kim Beattie from Banchory Trampoline & DMT Club was also pipped to bronze in the senior women’s DMT by 0.400. Other gymnasts from the seven Scottish clubs represented in Liverpool went through to the finals.

Fraser’s coaches, Kyle Lancashire and Bruce Craig, are understandably very proud of him, in what they say was his best performance to date. Speaking on behalf of them both, Kyle said:

“Going into the competition with the aim of defending his British Championship DMT title, Fraser knew he was going to have to step up his game from previous years. He had been working hard over the last year to improve both his difficulty, form and consistency.

He was up against some very talented performers from Liverpool and Andersontown in Northern Ireland plus he had the added pressure of aiming to attain the score to qualify to compete at the World Age Group Championships. In the actual competition, Fraser kept a cool head and executed four of the best passes he has ever done resulting in him winning the British title for the third year in a row and qualifying to compete at the World Age Groups in November.

“This was the first time Fraser had qualified for trampoline at the British Championships so there were no real expectations, the aim was just to go out and perform the best he could. He has made massive improvements in his trampolining over the last year by focusing more on his training and attending the Performance Pathway camps held by Olympic coach Paul Greaves.

His tariff was not as high as some of the slightly older boys in the group but he went out and performed three excellent routines. His final routine was one of the best he has ever done resulting in a second place and a silver medal. Bruce and I are extremely proud of Fraser's performances and the way he conducted himself throughout the whole weekend.”

The focus for gymnasts and coaches now turns to the Scottish National Trampoline, DMT and Tumbling Championships which you can see at Bells Sport's Centre this weekend. Details of times for Saturday and Sunday can be found here.
