Scottish junior all-around champion Pavel Karnejenko is in action at the Glasgow 2018 European Men’s Artistic Championships next week.
The 18 year-old is part of the Great Britain junior men’s team competing at the SSE Hydro on Friday 10 August.
For Pavel, the championships mean a return home, having been a member of City of Glasgow Gymnastics Club where he was coached by Marius Gherman. He earned his first national title at under 12 level and he has been the junior men’s all-around champion for the last two years.
Speaking to Scottish Gymnastics, he said: “I’m delighted to be selected for the Europeans in Glasgow and really honoured to be in the team. I kept chasing the goals and my dreams and it feels amazing.
“I’m looking forward to coming back to the city where I started my gymnastics career. All of my family will be there and it’ll be pretty special for my parents to watch me.
Pavel is joined in the junior men’s team by Adam Tobin, Jake Jarman, Jamie Lewis, and Donell Osbourne.
He continued: “The main focus is a team medal. We’ll be trying for the top spot although it will be tough against Russia and Switzerland but we’ve a strong team.”
The gymnastics action begins tomorrow with the European women’s artistic championships over four days. Representing GB are Commonwealth champions Alice Kinsella and Georgia-Mae Fenton, British champion Kelly Simm and Commonwealth silver medallist Lucy Stanhope, while Taeja James replaces Becky Downie who sadly withdraws through injury. The junior women’s team features Ondine Achampong, Halle Hilton, Pheobe Jakubczyk, Amelie Morgan and Annie Young.
The men’s event begins on Thursday 9 August with double Olympic champion Max Whitlock MBE returning to the SSE Hydro where he won his first World title. Along with fellow Commonwealth gold medallists James Hall, Dom Cunningham and Courtney Tulloch and 2017 British champion Joe Fraser, they make up the GB team. Scotland’s Frank Baines will also travel to Glasgow as reserve.
