Scottish Gymnastics and Commonwealth Games Scotland have released the selection policies for artistic and rhythmic gymnastics for Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The gymnastics selection policies for Team Scotland are different from previous years due to the Covid-19 pandemic affecting events and gymnasts’ preparations.
The policies set out the standards required in men’s artistic, women’s artistic and rhythmic gymnastics. Artistic qualification is centred around results at the 2022 British Championship with opportunities to achieve benchmark scores at named selection events between January and April 2022. Rhythmic selection incorporates two phases, the first being the 2021 British Championships and then results at named international events from January to April 2022.
Team Scotland selects the team from athletes who perform with distinction in 2022 based on nominations made by Scottish Gymnastics and places available across all sports.
Scottish Gymnastics performance manager Jamie Bowie said: “We are pleased to announce the policies after a robust process to approve the standards in partnership with Commonwealth Games Scotland.
“Each discipline’s policy was shaped in consultation with coaches, athletes and technical panels. Following approval of the policies, we hosted an information session about the journey to Birmingham 2022 for age-eligible gymnasts and their personal coaches. We will have follow-up sessions in the lead up to the team announcement.
“The main selection window for gymnasts starts next year before nominations are made by Scottish Gymnastics in April 2022. Commonwealth Games Scotland will confirm the final selection for Team Scotland the following month.
“We wish all the best to gymnasts and their coaches in their preparations towards achieving the standards.”
The XXII Commonwealth Games take place in the Birmingham from 28 July to 8 August 2022.
Jamie will accompany the gymnasts having already been selected as gymnastics team manager by Team Scotland. The appointment of lead team coaches will be made later this year.
