Balmoor Gymnastics Club is a general and women’s artistic gymnastics club based in Peterhead. It is also the most easterly Scottish Gymnastics club. Coach and secretary tells us all about their club.
The club was established in 2004 in our local community centre sports hall and we are now delighted to have our very own gym where we welcome approx. 120 gymnasts aged between four and 17 to our classes every week.
We currently have eight coaches, three trainee coaches and are looking forward to helping more of our gymnasts to develop in their coaching and judging experiences going forward.
We love to be able to offer our sport to the children of Peterhead and the surrounding areas. As well as being able to offer volunteering, coaching and judging opportunities which have helped to progress many of our gymnasts into university placements and job opportunities. Not only that but we have made so very many life-long friends over the years: gymnasts, coaches, parents, and helpers.
The club has been very popular within the community since the very beginning. With previous gymnastics clubs in the town having come to an end we were able to bring gymnastics back to the town – with most of our original coaches having been gymnasts with the previous clubs. The club was so popular that we had to keep adding more classes. We currently have recreational classes, beginners/intermediate competitive squad classes and a four-piece class. We hope to be able to offer more classes as our coaches develop their skills and qualifications, and as the Covid restrictions are eased.
We have been supported by many local businesses in the community over the years who have helped us with funding for equipment and general support to get the club to where it is now. We are also very grateful for our members and community for supporting our fundraising efforts over the years. We have a lot of dedicated supporters and are so very grateful for all the people who have helped the club over the years.
One Google review included: “Brilliant club for kids, very friendly group, and easy to approach and speak to”. We do try to be a friendly, fun and approachable club and we teach our gymnasts to be supportive of each other and enjoy themselves.
We have had a lot of memorable experiences throughout the years with competitions, camps, displays and even training sessions with Beth Tweddle. We always enjoy a weekend away with #TeamBalmoor. We have also built fantastic friendships with other gymnastics clubs over the years helping out where we can.
It is a testament to the club that we have a lot of gymnasts who have been with the club from the age of five and are still keen to come along to help with classes and go through their coaching and judging qualifications.
