Frequently Asked Questions

1. Which safeguarding course do I need to complete?
The next course you need depends on your current qualification and role. In most cases, you should progress to the next level in the pathway (for example, after completing SGWP2 you should move on to SGWP3 if your role has not changed). Course requirements may vary depending on your specific role within the club.

2. How far in advance should I book my next safeguarding course?
You should book onto your next safeguarding course at least one week before your current qualification expires. This ensures there is no gap in your safeguarding coverage and allows you to continue your role without interruption.

3. How do I book a safeguarding course?
Courses can be booked via the Scottish Gymnastics website through the course calendar.

4. Do I need to complete safeguarding training if I only help occasionally?
Yes. Anyone working or volunteering in a regulated role with children or young people in gymnastics must complete the appropriate safeguarding training, regardless of how often they help.

5. What happens if my safeguarding qualification expires?
If your qualification expires, you must immediately book onto the next available course at the appropriate level on the course calendar.
If you are unable to attend a course before your expiry date, you may request an extension by emailing safeguarding@scottishgymnastics.org with the following information:
The date your current qualification expires
The date you have booked onto your next course
The reason you have not been able to complete training before expiry
Please note, acceptable reasons include medical issues or bereavement/funerals. Forgetting or being on holiday are not considered valid reasons for an extension.
All requests will be reviewed by the safeguarding team, and you will be contacted by email to confirm whether an extension has been granted. You must not be in any regulated role if you do not have an active safeguarding credential on your account

6. Are the courses online or in person?
Most safeguarding courses are delivered online via Brightspace and Zoom, although our Safeguarding for Young Leaders is in person.

7. How long do the courses take to complete?
Course durations vary depending on the level, but most take between 2–4 hours and may include both online learning and live virtual sessions.

8. Do I need to complete courses in order?
Yes, most safeguarding training should be completed in progression (SGWP1 → SGWP2 → SGWP3/4). However, some specialist courses such as judges or adult safeguarding are standalone and do not follow this pathway.

9. Who needs safeguarding training in a club?
Anyone working or volunteering in a regulated role with children or adults at risk must complete safeguarding training. This includes coaches, helpers, chaperones, safeguarding officers, and committee members.

10. What is the PVG scheme and how does it relate to safeguarding training?
The PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) scheme is part of the recruitment process to ensure individuals working with children or vulnerable adults are suitable. Safeguarding training supports this by ensuring individuals understand their responsibilities once in role.

11. How can i change my course booking

Scottish Gymnastics Safe Recruitment Workshop

The safe recruitment workshop is a two-hour module which covers the steps to take to safely recruit coaches and volunteers into your club as well as PVG and current legislation. Clubs need to understand their responsibilities in terms of the recruitment of staff and how the legislation affects both them and Scottish Gymnastics.  It is mandatory that all safeguarding officers, along with the senior/head coach attend this training. Other committee members may also wish to attend. There are no exemptions available for this course.
Please note this award does not need to be repeated unless there is significant change to PVG legislation where Scottish Gymnastics feels that an updated workshop would be necessary for members.

Scottish Board and Committee Safeguarding

This eLearning module is specifically targeted at board and/or committee members, including sub-committees, of a club or sporting organisation (eLearning not to be confused with Wellbeing & Protection training or CWPS for coaches and volunteers working directly with children).

This eLearning focuses on the knowledge and skills that board and committee members require, as they are responsible for the management and governance of gymnastics clubs. It is essential that committee members also understand their role in safeguarding. Even though they may not work directly with children, they have a duty of care to ensure that appropriate safeguarding policies, procedures, and culture are in place across the organisation. Their awareness and involvement are crucial in creating a safe environment for all members, supporting staff and volunteers in implementing good practice, and ensuring that safeguarding remains a priority at every level of club management.

Who should take this course: Board and committee members which includes club chairs, treasurers, secretaries, trustees ect and people over the age of 16
