Artistic | 2023 Northern European Championships
Scotland’s artistic gymnasts won three medals at the 2023 Northern European Championships in Sweden.
Teams from twelve countries, including England, Wales and Northern Ireland, took part in the event in Halmstad on 25 and 26 November.
The young women’s team finished fifth in a strong field in the team competition on the first day. At the forefront of this result was Hannah Wayman. Having topped her subdivision in Saturday morning’s session, Hannah went on to finish in a brilliant sixth place in the all-around competition in her international debut. Her strong performance earned her a place in Sunday’s beam final.
Crystelle Lake finished 19th out of 65 in the all-around competition and qualified for the floor final in sixth place. The City of Glasgow gymnast ensured the Scotland women’s team’s competition ended on a high, earning a silver medal in the floor final with a score of 12.300.
Milli De O’Hara and Lottie Smith contributed strongly to the team score, with Katie Ferries also competing in the all-around after being called up as an injury replacement. Eilidh Gorrell competed bars and beam in what was her first international competition since Birmingham 2022.
Competing at his first Northern European Championships, junior gymnast Reuben Ward finished in sixth place in Saturday’s all-around competition. The Manchester gymnast qualified for three apparatus finals in the field of seniors. He went on to win the bronze medal in Sunday’s pommel horse final.
Notts Gymnastics Academy’s Hamish Carter put in a stunning performance in Sunday’s floor final to earn the silver medal. His score of 13.600 meant he just narrowly missed out on top spot by 0.050 points.
There were also apparatus final appearances for Connor Sullivan and Euan McLellan in the vault and high bar finals respectively. Cameron Lynn finished day one in twelfth position in the all-around and Daniel Sabba competed in five apparatus and gained valuable competition experience.
Congratulations to the medallists and their personal coaches.
