Coaching & Instructing

If you are excited about the possibilities of coaching gymnastics, we offer you the opportunity to be part of a large and growing community. Your coaching journey starts here!

Becoming a gymnastics coach has never been more straightforward. The new foundation coach programme is designed to help you start coaching quicker, learn in a more practical way, and build the confidence to lead your own sessions.

The infographic shows the steps you can take to becoming a coach and progressing in gymnastics. You can read more information about the foundation coach programme below the diagram.

What is Foundation Coach?

Foundation Coach is the starting point for anyone who wants to take their first step into coaching. Whether you’re a young gymnast looking to give back to your club, a parent wanting to become involved, or completely new to the sport.

This programme gives you a clear and supportive starting point. It also helps clubs build stronger coaching teams through a simple, structured pathway for new coaches to develop and progress.

Foundation Coach replaces the previous Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications. There is one clear and accessible pathway with a focus on real coaching experience:

  • learning by doing
  • developing confidence in the gym
  • gaining the skills needed to create positive, engaging sessions for gymnasts

Your coaching journey

Your journey begins with Assistant Foundation Coach, available from the age of 16. You will start supporting sessions and learn the fundamentals of coaching. You will also develop your understanding of how to create safe and enjoyable environments.

From there, you’ll move on to Foundation Coach at 18, where you’ll take the step into leading your own sessions. You’ll build your ability to plan, deliver and reflect on your coaching. You then complete an independent assessment that confirms you’re ready to coach on your own.

Once qualified, you can continue to progress through development coach, performance coach, and even high-performance pathways, depending on your ambitions.

Member exclusive

The Foundation Coach programme is available exclusively to Scottish Gymnastics and British Gymnastics members. This allows us to maintain high standards, provide consistent support, and invest in a high-quality learning experience for our community.
