All-Around Bodes Well for Apparatus Finals
We caught up with our Team Scotland artistic gymnasts after their success in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games all-around finals.
Frank Baines finished fourth, just agonisingly missing out on a medal, but he was still happy with his performance, especially ahead of the horizontal and parallel bars finals on Monday:
I feel really happy. I had a few mistakes in qualification and it was good to put them right today. Obviously fourth place is a tough place to finish but I’m just happy to have gone out there, completed six routines and gone clean and come out injury free.
I’ve got two more finals left on Monday, p-bar and high bar so I’m looking forward to them. I performed quite well on them today so hopefully I’ll go and do my job again. But I’m looking forward to a day off tomorrow as I am pretty tired!
Hamish Carter wowed the crowd to finish a superb sixth in the event, and has vowed to show us more in the floor and horizontal bar finals:
It was the best floor routine of my life to start which put me in the lead after the first round, so I was leading the competition by I think by seven and a half tenths on the first piece which is pretty special for someone competing in their first Commonwealth Games.
Unfortunately I had a bit of a slip up on pommels. It was nothing that I can’t do, nothing I hadn’t been doing in the gym. I’m just so happy to have gone through my first major all-round final and impressed everyone and made myself proud.
I have done two of my best floor routines now and I’ve got the feeling of it all now and understand exactly what I have to do now. The pressure is off a lot now because I know exactly what I need to do for the final. I’ve done it twice now and they’ve both been almost perfect so I know what I’ve got to do.
> How the drama of the men's all-around unfolded
We hope to catch up with Cara Kennedy and Shannon Archer once they've rested, although they do not have long before they are competing in the vault final.
> How Cara and Shannon earned Scotland's best Games all-around finish
We wish all our gymnasts, including Dan Purvis who will be contesting floor and rings on Sunday, all the best in the finals.
