Commonwealth Games | High Five for Marius
Marius Gherman is the lead coach for the men’s artistic team at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. This is the fifth time in a row that the City of Glasgow Gymnastics Club coach is representing Team Scotland.
We wanted to celebrate this amazing achievement as the first coach to reach this milestone. Here are some of Marius’ Games memories in his own words.
It is an honour and privilege to be a part of and represent Team Scotland at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
At the Birmingham 2022 games we stayed in university student accommodation, and the competition itself was organised very well. We had some unexpected errors in the last rotation of the team final which was disappointing. But the competition venue and the atmosphere was amazing.

Commonwealth Culture
Prior to the Gold Coast games in 2018, we stayed in a holding camp on the Sunshine Coast which was very warm and nice. When we arrived, we were introduced to some aboriginal people and famous animals so we could get a flavour of what Australia is all about. We saw aboriginal people singing, dancing, and playing the didgeridoo.
We had a chance to interact with koala’s, snakes, and small crocodiles. We also visited a zoo where we saw much bigger crocodiles, and were able to feed kangaroos. Although we had already seen some kangaroos roaming free just outside of our accommodation!

The Glasgow 2014 Games were amazing, the atmosphere was electric and the crowd was cheering for all the home nations. This was the best competition for the Scotland men’s team who won a lot of medals. It was a very happy experience.
The Delhi 2010 games were different and unique. We rode rikshaws to get around in the city, but they were a little scary because they didn’t come with seatbelts. I also remember there were bats in the roof of the competition arena, and they would occasionally fall down to the floor during competition!

People Make Glasgow
My favourite memories are when the men’s team achieved a silver team medal at the Glasgow 2014 games, and the bronze team medal at the Gold Coast 2018 Games.
After having the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014, I know what it was like back then to have the home crowd cheering and it was absolutely electrifying. This time will be no different, and I am very much looking forward to it.
I believe we have the right team and the right support staff in place, all who have a lot of experience behind them, to achieve a team medal target and make all-around and individual finals. Spectators will surely see a lot of amazing gymnastics.
