Emma from City of Edinburgh Trampoline Club
Emma has recently completed the Scottish Gymnastics Leadership Award with other young members of City of Edinburgh Trampoline Club. She spoke to us about her reasons for taking part, and the lessons she’ll take from it.
I decided to take part in the leadership course because I am hoping to do some coaching in the future, I hoped I would gain confidence and learn to work better as a leader.
During the course I learnt about different personality styles and how to better understand myself and others and how to become a better leader by working on effective communication.
As a performance pathway gymnast for DMT, I have learnt a lot about how to think about my strengths and weaknesses and the course helped me to identify other areas for improvement and I’m already noticing improvements.
In the gym, these skills will be useful when leading a group of gymnasts or helping out with the younger gymnasts too. I’m looking forward to putting the skills I’ve learned into practice.
What I learnt on the course will be helpful for my future career as most jobs require good communication skills, and the ability to work well with others.
Emma’s mum, Anne said:
Emma really enjoyed taking part in the leadership course and she looked forward to the weekly sessions. She would share with me what she had been doing and the things she was learning, it made her more self-aware, highlighting what she was good at and the things she needed to work on.
The Scottish Gymnastics Leadership Award is accredited by Sports Leaders and consists of four modules focusing on the basic skills a leader needs to lead others in any sport or activity.
Normally, the course is delivered within a gymnastics context, face to face over two days of workshops. The content has been altered in response to COVID-19 and is now offered online through zoom with only one session that is practical in the gym, although we are now hosting face to face sessions with clubs again.
