Rhythmic | Beacon Gymnast Re-Selected for British Senior Squad
Scottish Gymnastics is excited to announce that a rhythmic gymnast from Beacon Gymnastics Club has been officially re-selected onto the Great Britain Rhythmic Senior Performance Squad for 2022.
Louise Christie, who was initially selected to the Great Britain squad for the 2019 period as a reserve, has continued to strengthen her skills over the last eighteen months despite the challenges that the pandemic presented and was selected onto the senior squad back in 2020.
Her re-selection to the programme for 2022 followed her performance at the GB trial at Lilleshall in December 2021 and performances in 2021 which included a bronze medal for clubs and a silver medal in ribbon at the British Individual Apparatus Open in October. Louise was also selected to competed for Great Britain at the 2021 Aura Cup in Zagreb (pictured above) and also at the 2019 28th Portimão International Tournament in Portugal.
Louise joins eight other senior rhythmic gymnasts on the programme, with performance camps to be held between January and November 2022. The squad activity consists of regular training camps at Lilleshall led by Maria Gateva and the rest of the GB coaching team as well as international competition opportunities throughout the year.
Jamie Bowie, Scottish Gymnastic Performance Manager said: “Louise’s selection on to the GB senior squad is a welcome start to the new year and the selection reflects the hard work and commitment Louise has invested into her gymnastics as well as the support from her coach Amy and her club Beacon RGC."
Louise’s training has already started to gear up towards some big goals for 2022 with this selection a great boost. She is a great role model to gymnasts within our rhythmic performance pathway programme.
As well as her aspirations to represent Great Britain, Louise and her coach Amy Stewart will be working hard to target qualification as part of Team Scotland at this summer’s Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. At the 2019 Scottish Rhythmic Championships – Louise took home the senior medals across a numbers of apparatus competitions.
On her selection to the programme, Louise said: “It feels great to have been re-selected for the GBR squad, especially after such challenging times, training, travelling and competing with ever changing restrictions. I am looking forward to the hard work at training camps and hope to travel and compete with some of my teammates again through 2022”.
A massive thank you to my coach Amy and the rest of Beacon Rhythmic Gymnastics Club for thier continued support to ensure I am always prepared for competitions and progressing towards my targets.
A huge congratulations to Louise. We look forward to following her progress this year, including the first GB squad training which took place over the weekend.
