Scottish Gymnasts Win Historic Commonwealth Team Silver
It is a historic day for Gymnastics in Scotland, as Scotland's Men's Artistic team comprising of Liam Davie, Adam Cox, Daniel Keatings, Daniel Purvis and Frank Baines claimed Scotland's first ever team medal in gymnastics at a Commonwealth Games, winning silver in front of a packed Hydro arena in Glasgow
Until now Scottish gymnasts had only claimed individual medals at the Commonwealth Games. The team medal marks a historic first for Scotland.
On the historic success for Scotland Daniel Keatings said
"Amazing, I can't express in words how it feels right now. I had a big disappointment missing out on the Olympics in 2012 through injury and obviously this is such a big multi sport event for it to be in my home country is amazing, it's the Games I never had."
On returning to the village this evening with a medal,
"It will feel awesome, a sense of pride knowing we have got this medal and it has taken us over the tally."
Heading in to the final day of competition the Scottish sat in 2nd place behind England. Gallant displays and excellent routines on parallel bars, high bar and vault from the Scottish men was still not enough to topple their fierce rivals England, leaving Scotland to claim silver with a score of 257.603.
Frank Baines said,
"It feels amazing, the crowd were behind us all the way. Wwe have got a silver medal which is great, the first ever medal for Scotland in a team event which is amazing."
Adam Cox said,
"Being a part of this team is an absolute honour, the boys went out there and did me proud. I really enjoyed it, atmosphere was buzzing. The crowd here were incredible, I absolutely loved it one of the best experiences of my life without a doubt."
City of Glasgow team mate Liam Davie continued,
"Just to be here in a silver medal winning team, first time in history is just amazing and I am glad to be here with one of the team mates from my club."
Scott Harper Chair of Scottish Gymnastics said,
"Today we have witnessed a historic moment for gymnastics in Scotland, the winning of Scotland's first ever team medal in Gymnastics at a Commonwealth Games. It is fitting that this was achieved in Scotland, in front of a home crowd."
Unfortunately there was no podium finish for the Scottish women's team, finishing in 5th place with a score of 151.595, however there was joy in the tndividual qualification as Amy Regan and Emma White both qualified for the individual apparatus final. Furthermore Scotland will have representation in the individual vault final on Thursday after Emma White qualified, as she did at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
Erin McLachlan commented on her Commonwealth Games experience,
"It is amazing, fantastic, unreal! I'm happy with all of the routines. I did beam, bars and vault and they all went really well. couldn't have asked for anything more, with the support of the team it has been amazing"
On the atmosphere Erin continued,
"It just helps you so much, I don't think any one understands how much it helps ".
