Three Scots Selected for 2020 Europeans
Three Scottish gymnasts have been selected for the 2020 Trampoline, Tumbling and Double-mini Trampoline (DMT) European Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden from 7 to 10 May.
Fraser McLeod will make his first senior appearance for Great Britain in the men’s DMT team. The former Scottish junior gymnast of the year will be competing alongside British champion Daniel Berridge, Harrison Green, and Rhys Gray.
Our senior gymnast of the year Kim Beattie from Banchory Trampoline Club will lead the women’s DMT charge alongside Ruth Shevelan, Phoebe Williams and Bethany Williamson.
Junior gymnast of the year Sophie Campbell of Sapphire Gymnastics Club has been named in the junior British tumbling team with Georgi Issott, Naana Oppon, and Comfort Yeates.
Sophie’s coaches Jasmine and Danielle Lessani were understandably over the moon. Danielle said:
“It is a massive achievement as only the top four girls and boys in the country go, so to be in that group is just incredible. It was a surreal experience for Sophie to go to the Europeans trial at Milton Keynes and she was a bit star struck to be sharing the track with the seniors.”
Danielle's sister Jasmine, the 2019 Scottish young coach of the year, added: “We’re absolutely overwhelmed. It is such a massive achievement at such a young age. We were not expecting it at all.
“Danielle and I are travelling to Sweden with our family, gymnasts and parents from the club and will all be supporting Sophie. We hope it will inspire and encourage the gymnasts to aim for the level that Sophie has reached.”
Kim’s coach Melanie Stewart-Wills who has just become the assistant national technical lead for Scotland’s DMT performance programmes, said:“We are all absolutely delighted for Kim as she is selected once more to compete for Great Britain.
“Kim has trained so hard for this and she will continue to do so as new passes are being developed to increase difficulty for this season’s competitions. As always, we know Kim will try her best and we wish her, and the British teams, every success at the European Championships.”
Congratulations to the gymnasts and their coaches on their selection. We look forward to cheering them on in May!
