To achieve the Assistant Foundation Coach qualification you’ll need to successfully complete both parts of the programme:
• Part 1 – Foundations of Gymnastics Coaching: Online – self paced
• Part 2 – Delivering Gymnastics Activities:3 days in person
Foundations of Gymnastics Coaching is the first step towards becoming an Assistant Foundation Coach. This online course introduces the fundamentals of great coaching and prepares you for the practical Delivering Gymnastics Activities course. Learners must complete Foundations of Gymnastics coaching before being able to enrol onto Delivering Gymnastics Activities.
To enrol, you’ll need to:
- Be 16 years at the point of booking
- Hold a current PVG disclosure through Scottish Gymnastics, if you are not coaching vulnerable groups (for example over 18s only), you must have the ‘adult activity coach agreement’
- Have a current Scottish Gymnastics membership
What you’ll learn:
Throughout the course, you’ll explore the foundations of great coaching, including:
- The impacts of great coaching,
- The roles and responsibilities of an assistant foundation coach
- Support the development of the whole person
- The foundations of human movement
- Planning and delivering the gymnastics session
- Safe gymnastics skill development
- How gymnasts learn
- Coaching skills
Assessment:
To complete the course, you’ll need to work through all learning modules until you reach 100% completion. Once you’ve finished, your course certificate and digital credential will be added to MyBG. Please note you will not be an assistant foundation coach until you have also successfully completed Delivering Gymnastics Activities.
What to expect:
After booking, you’ll receive a confirmation email with access to Academy, where you can begin learning straight away. The course is self-paced and includes a range of interactive learning resources, including:
- quizzes to check your understanding
- expert-led webinars
- a downloadable Foundations of Gymnastics Coaching Handbook to keep as a future reference
Most learners complete the course in 8–14 hours. We recommend studying in 1–2 hour sessions, giving yourself time to take breaks and reflect on your learning.
