Commonwealth Games | Six Scottish judges selected for Glasgow 2026
Six Scottish artistic judges have been selected as officials for Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games later this month.
To ensure fair and consistent judging, selectors choose Brevet judges (the highest level of judge qualification) from across the Commonwealth nations. They appoint judges into one of two role categories: national technical official (NTO) or international technical official (ITO). Not all officials will be directly judging routines, some will be officiating lines and time beside the equipment or in the likes of a liaison role behind the scenes welcoming their community to the city.
For men’s artistic Andrew Mackie will be on execution with Duncan Runcie judging difficulty as ITO’s. Caitlin Ross will fufill the role of NTO with Tommy McGill (pictured above) as judge liasion. Pauline Smith will judge difficulty and Kirsty Burt as a NTO in women’s artistic respectivley.
Home Games excitement
Andrew Mackie attended Glasgow 2014 as an NTO and noted “the atmosphere in the arena was incredible and I’m looking forward to being a part of that again.”
Kirsty Burt on how it also feels to judge at a second Glasgow Games said: “I didn’t think I would experience another home Games, so it is really exciting. It will also be great to be able to show the international judges my home city.”
Tommy McGill (pictured above) added: “A home Games is always special. Glasgow has delivered some World Class gymnastics events over the last 16 years; the 2014 Games setting a new standard for the delivery of gymnastics competitions.”
Judging at this level takes years of dedication and practice. Caitlin Ross’s advice to anyone looking to start their journey is: “It can be a bit scary when you first start but the judging community is so welcoming and happy to share knowledge to any questions you might have.
“Even ask to pop into your local club to do some practice – it can be helpful for the gymnasts and coaches too.”
Congratulations to all on your judging appointments for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. We can’t wait to see you in The Arena from Friday 24 – Tuesday 28 July.
