Artistic | Eight medals for Scots at the 2024 Artistic British Champions
A total of eight medals were won by Scottish artistic gymnasts at the 2024 British Championships in the M&S Bank Arena, Liverpool from 14 to 17 March.
The medal victories were made up of all-around and apparatus podiums, from familiar faces in the Disability Masters competition and senior levels with one claiming a British champion title.
After announcing her retirement, and being crowned the 2024 Scottish all-around, bars and floor champion, Shannon Archer ensured she ended her career on a golden high over the weekend. The 2022 Commonwealth history making bronze medalist had audiences on the edge of their seats as she was last up to compete in the vault apparatus final. Performing a yurchenko double twist and a full twisting tsukahara, securing a score average of 13.25, she took home the final medal of her outstanding career in gold.
Reuben Ward from Manchester Academy excelled in his first senior British Championships finishing third in the all-around competition earning him places in three apparatus finals. He narrowly missed out on the podium for pommel by 0.05 of a mark. He finished fourth on this piece and seventh on rings. Claiming the final place in the high bar final, Reuben improved his performance enough on the day to jump up the rankings and earn a silver medal.
Joining Reuben in the top 8 all-around was West Lothian’s Cameron Lynn placing sixth with a score of 77.45. Scoring 13.5 in both the qualifiers and finals, Lynn placed sixth on pommel horse and improved his floor score by .35 to move him up into fifth.
In the Disability Masters finals we had four Scots qualify across men’s and women’s. Megan Docherty (West Lothian) is no stranger to medaling at this competition, qualifying for all four pieces, and brought home bronze on both vault and beam. Craig McGarrity from City of Glasgow made his return to the national stage, winning silver on pommel and bronze on vault.
