TeamGym | Fierce finals for Scottish pair at the 2024 TeamGym European Championships
Forth Valley gymnasts Evan Dewar and Matthew Capes (pictured third rear left above) both represented Great Britain at the 2024 TeamGym European Champions in Baku, Azerbaijan across the 16 – 19 October.
The selection process for this event evidenced the breadth of talent in the UK making it a tough feat to be in contention for selection. Gymnasts from across the country showed their best tumbling, trampette and vaulting work alongside demonstrating well-presented dance and floor-based elements.
First onto the floor out of the pair and his first time at this level of competition was Evan in the junior men’s team. The team qualified in the top 5 to progress onto finals. Their competition concluded on the Saturday with them finishing fifth in Europe.

Matthew is no stranger to this level of competition as he once again joined the men’s senior team. They showed consistency in their performances, finishing fourth in both qualifying and finals.
Amanda Boucher was selected as one of three category 1 brevet judges to be a part of the GB delegation at this event and appointed head judge on floor. She commented: “It was a fantastic event; every final went down to the final scores to decide the medals.
“Evan and Matthew were both superb in their teams. Evan featured in almost all the runs for the junior men and Matthew was a key member of the GB senior men to take fourth place.
“Both should be very proud of their contribution to their teams and all their hard work in the preparation for the competition, doing Scotland & GB proud. It was an honour to stand shoulder to shoulder with them and the whole delegation.”
Congratulations to Evan, Matthew and Amanda on their selections and achievements out at this competition.
