The National Lottery 30 Years | Hamilton
The National Lottery celebrates 30 years since the first draw held on 19 November 1994. We spoke to Hamilton about the funding they received to help them deliver an uplifting gymnastics experience for all.
Since it began, The National Lottery has raised over £50 billion and awarded more than 690,000 grants to good causes. These include everything from environmental projects and local communities to the arts and sport. Gymnastics in Scotland has benefitted from this throughout this time, including Hamilton Gymnastics Club. They shared their funding story and experience with us from start to finish.
“We recently benefited from the facilities fund that we previously applied for in 2012 so decided to try again with another project. The process applying is online, but we had a lot of support from Grant Duncan and Sarah Robertson (from sportscotland) making a daunting form simpler to complete. We are very thankful for all their support.”
How the funding developed the club
“The funding allowed us to build an inground foam pit and trampoline, increase the height of the roof, improve our foyer and waiting area plus, purchase Olympic standard equipment. The upgrades to our gym will ensure we can offer every gymnast the opportunity to learn new skills and develop their gymnastics to the best of their ability.”
Why funding sport recreationally to international level is so important
“Funding is so important as it allows clubs to improve facilities and ultimately increase membership. This funding has allowed us to start new classes offering our local community more options to take part in gymnastics. It also ensures our elite athletes can train in Olympic standard equipment aiding in their competitive journey.”
The benefits to the wider club community beyond the gymnasts
“The improved foyer space has allowed a waiting area for parents while their child is in gymnastics. It has given a place for gymnasts to complete their homework/relax during longer training sessions. We also have a hot desk available for coaches and parents to use while waiting at the gym if they need to work. This space has allowed parents to stay longer at the gym improving communication links with our coaches – it’s much easier to chat face to face in a friendly environment.
“A huge thank you to the National Lottery for their support. It has made a huge difference to our club and in turn to our 1400 gymnasts.”
Happy 30 years and a huge thank you to the National Lottery – you’re a game changer!
