Artistic | 2024 Northern European Championships
Scottish artistic gymnasts bring home five individual medals from the 2024 Northern European Championships in Ireland.
Twelve countries, including the United Kingdom home nations, took part in the event in Dublin on 21 and 22 September.
Day one hosted the apparatus qualifications, all-around finals and team competitions. In the team element due to injury withdrawals, Scotland’s women did not make the criteria for this event. The men’s team finished fifth just 0.650 away from the bronze medal showing just how tough a level of competition this Championships was.
Missing out on an all-around partner by 0.450 to his West Lothian training partner, Euan McLellan finished in fourth in Northern Europe. His qualification performances secured him two finals and second reserve for rings. Finishing sixth in vault and rings after being called up, his golden moment came as he finished top of the podium for p-bars after qualifying in third on this piece.
Improving his position from last year’s championships, Hamish Carter (Notts) was consistently clean on floor where he improved his score from qualifications by .100 to 13.900 to claim the gold. The same medal he also won at his first ever Northern Europeans back in 2017.
Cameron Lynn (West Lothian) stepped onto the podium on day one to claim the bronze in the all-around competition securing spots in the high bar, floor (as reserve) and p-bar (as reserve) finals. Finals day saw him moved from reserve on p-bars finishing fifth then returning to the podium following his silver winning high bar performance.
The fifth medal from the team came in the form of bronze with a score of 12.400 from Lottie Smith (Corby) after qualifying in seventh place and .200 less for this final.
Joining Euan in the vault final was Connor Sullivan (Leeds) finishing just ahead of his teammate in fifth place. City of Glasgow gymnast Eilidh Gorrell finished sixth on floor and fifth in the bars final with clean routines throughout respectively.
Honorable mentions to Aaron Convery (Hamilton), Brooke Evans (Dynamic), Luca Robinson (City of Newcastle) and Sophie Campbell (City of Aberdeen) as they all stepped up to compete at their first international at a senior level while still of junior age. Katie Ferries from City of Aberdeen returned to this competition for the second year in a row and although picked up a minor injury on beam managed to successfully put out a two new skills cleanly on bars.
Congratulations to the medalists and delegation overall for their success at this international competition.
