Five Selected for DMT and Tumbling Worlds
Five Scots are celebrating after being selected for next month’s FIG 2018 Trampoline, Tumbling & DMT World Championships and World Age Group Championships.
One of the five female gymnasts will be competing in tumbling, becoming the first ever Scot to represent GB in this discipline at world age groups.
In double mini trampoline, Kim Beattie (Banchory Trampoline & DMT Club) and Caitlin O’Brien (City of Edinburgh Trampoline Club) lead the way having been named in the senior women’s team for the World Championships in St Petersburg, Russia from 7 to 10 November. Kim won team silver at the 2017 event, while Caitlin steps up to senior level having won gold at last year’s world age group championships in the 17-21 category.
Ciara Donlevy (Banchory/Edinburgh) will be part of this year’s 17-21 girls’ DMT team at the World Age Groups, also being held in St Petersburg, from 15 – 18 November. She will be joined by Ava Fettes, also Banchory, who has been selected in the 11-12 girls’ category in the same discipline.
The fifth gymnast from Scotland is Demi Adams from Sapphire Gymnastics Club who has reached new heights for Scottish tumbling by being named in the 15-16 girls’ team for the world age group championships.
Demi started in display gymnastics with the Maryhill-based club when she was nine and only started tumbling when she was 11. She came 7th in the final of her first FIG British Championships last year and just over a week ago, she won bronze in the same championships, much to the delight of her two coaches, Danielle and Jasmine Lessani.
Danielle said: “It has been such an exciting and overwhelming week for our club and we’re still on a high after the British Championships. Demi making the team for world age groups has just topped our whole year off!
“Last year Jasmine and I went to watch the World Championships to get an insight of the standard at a world age group competition and to see what we could hopefully achieve in the distant future but we never thought a year later we would have made this a reality.”
On the back of their trip and learning from high-performance coaches, the Lessani sisters set five-year goals: developing one gymnast to become part of a GB training squad, have one gymnast win a British medal, and to have one selected to represent GB. They have been astonished to have reached these targets within one year, and have no doubt how Demi’s selection will inspire other gymnasts.
Jasmine added: “Demi has worked extremely hard, in the gym six days a week, and also looks after her nutrition, conditioning and recovery. We make sure she takes time off too as that’s important after intense training so she can also enjoy time with her family and friends.
“This gives everyone a drive. We work with kids from the age of five and they’re already looking up to her wanting to be Demi. They will want that for themselves so will want to stay in the sport and work hard and achieve that level.”
Congratulations to all the gymnasts and their coaches.
