Men’s Artistic Lead Coach Appointed
Marius Gherman has been appointed as lead coach for the Scottish Gymnastics men’s artistic programme.
Marius is no stranger to the high-performance level of gymnastics, having been part of the coaching team at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and also taking on the lead coach role during the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games three years ago (pictured with Dan Purvis, above).
In terms of his own gymnastics journey, he was an Olympic bronze medallist while representing his home country of Romania in the high bar competition at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.
Following his retirement from competitive gymnastics, Marius moved to the UK and has been coaching in Scotland for more than 20 years. Over the last few years, he has been involved across our artistic programmes from British Grades finals to the men’s artistic national performance programme activity. Marius was recognised for his contribution to men's artistic gymnastics when he was named club coach of the year at the Scottish Gymnastics awards in 2017
Marius will bring his wealth of expertise to the role working alongside national technical lead, Scott Hann MBE and women’s artistic lead coach, Becki Campbell. His appointment completes our artistic coaching team and will build on the world-class support for gymnasts and coaches during their performance journey.
On news of his appointment, Marius said: "I am delighted to have been appointed as the men's artistic lead coach and I'm looking forward to working alongside the National Technical Advisor Scott Hann MBE in supporting the gymnasts and coaches on the national performance programme."
The current approach to artistic performance sees both men’s and women’s activity running concurrently, sharing a culture of excellence and national training sessions.
Following the shutdown of performance gymnastics due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Marius takes the lead at an important time, with activity within our performance programmes ramping up ahead of next year’s Commonwealth Games preparations and looking ahead to developing the future talent through our artistic performance pathway.
Scott Hann MBE said:
I am delighted that Marius will take the role of the Men’s lead coach. With his many years of experience, both as a world class gymnast and coach, I have no doubt he will help continue to raise the level of our men’s programme.
Jamie Bowie, Scottish Gymnastics performance manager, Olympic disciplines said: “We have been fortunate in Scotland over a number of years of benefitting from Marius’ expertise both as a personal coach in our programmes and in team coaching roles at a number of internationals, including at Commonwealth Games level. The value that Marius will now bring to this integral coaching leadership role within our artistic gymnastics programme is significant in supporting gymnasts and coaches.”
We look forward to seeing Marius take up his role and congratulate him on his appointment. You can find out more about our performance activity below.
